He was 45 and had just finished reading 'Halftime,' by Bob Buford. Its thesis is that closing in on 50 is actually the beginning of the better half of life. Turner --- CEO of 60 Second Communications, a division of the Atlanta office of BKV Interactive and Direct Response --- said he was going through what he called a 'mini midlife crisis.' His discomfort was not about the loss of his youth. 'I wanted more than a big bank account to show for my time,' he said. 'I was wondering what I would be leaving behind, what I had done with what I was given.' Dayna knew his concern. 'Jamie always told me that he felt he was put here for a purpose, ... that there was something he was supposed to do to make the world a better place,' she said." The Atlanta Journal-Constitution article goes on to report on how the charity came into being: "Soon a mutual friend introduced Turner to Bill Staley. A retired sales and marketing executive with Ford Motor Co., Staley had recently returned from a safari that included a stop in Karatu, Tanzania --- specifically the village of Tloma. What he saw was unnerving, Staley told him. The water supply came from a stream where waste was dumped. The school was far too small for the 650 students it was trying to serve. Many students jammed into desks meant for one. Indeed, the school "bell" was an old automobile wheel mounted on a post. Ringing it meant striking it with a tire iron. Soon there was a small board of directors for ASBR, which was granted official 501(c)(3) status, seeking ways to help children around the globe. The plan was simple --- build schools, supply them and help improve teacher training. 'We weren't going to save the whole world at once,' Turner said. 'But we could one child at a time.'"
